The ICC project uses the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) classification of the creative industries, which includes the wide range of businesses and professions shown in the figure below. “Creative sector” is used to broaden this definition to include non-profit, education, training, and other activities that may not typically considered part of “industry”.
Many in the creative sector can be considered part of the nation’s STEM workforce. In 2022, the National Science Board’s Science and Engineering (S&E) Indicators expanded the definition of the STEM workforce to encompass all workers who use science and engineering skills in their jobs. S&E skills are used throughout the creative sector.
